i bumped into mr richard & terrance at funan mall when i was on my way to chinatown to get my long-awaited sun block (cos its cheaper there. haha) they laughed when i showed them the crest on my polo-tee but i stood unfazed & smiled cos i'm earning and doing rather well in ducktours. i love my job & i enjoy every single bit even when i'm challenged with some tough guests, but like wat peili said earlier on, i learnt more in my previous job but here, i have fun & i earn every month excluding my tips! HAH!
anw, i didnt get the sun block in the end. i was contemplating between nivea's sun block cum whitening and banana boat's block cos i'm getting too tanned but i wanna whiten my skin too! the shopkeeper was then telling me against nivea cos of the chemical
'paraben' in their products
(methyl & propyl paraben). he went on saying that nivea is produced in Thailand and that Asians do not read the labels since we don't understand what the chemicals do. well, i can't agree more. all he did was to encourage paraben-free products and said that white spots were caused by it. i was quite hapless cos it's true i dunno what chemicals is being used and what effects is REALLY has but i didn't wanna trust the shopkeeper that quickly because hey, i was in chinatown! basically i didn't know what to do & who to trust so being a student from RP, i did my research & found this article.
Keeping Well-PreservedCosmetic preservatives makers offer alternatives as widely used parabens come under scrutiny
Marc S. Reisch.http://pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/83/8346specialtychem3.html"...The first appeared in the Journal of Applied Toxicology [2004, 24, 5] about two years ago. Researchers studied breast tumors from 20 patients and detected the presence of minute amounts of parabens in the tissue. Since parabens are known to be weak estrogen mimics, the paper suggested a connection between the presence of parabens in breast tissue and breast cancer."
"Then in September, Japanese researchers presented a paper at a conference of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists in Florence, Italy, that added to concerns over parabens. The researchers, mostly from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, applied lotion containing just one type of paraben—methylparaben—twice a day for a month to the skin of 12 Japanese volunteers. They found that methylparaben did not metabolize in the strateum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis, and suggested that its presence accelerated skin aging..""Critics point out that it is difficult to reach any broad conclusions about parabens based on the small number of samples in the two studies.."you might be thinking why are nivea products or any brands using the chemical is still out? well, like what the shopkeeper said, there is still market for it. people are still buying the products so they're still supplying. & it's also stated in the article that there has to be a larger scale or more research done to concretely prove the assumption true since only 2 studies has been done.
& to be safe rather than sorry, i'm just gonna go for banana boat's sun block.
then i did some impulse shopping on 2 tops when i was really looking for some cds/dvds to buy.
